WHY BUY OILY FISH?

Oily fish is an incredibly healthy food.

There are many reasons to buy oily fish from Mariskito, but we’re going to tell you the most important ones.

Oily fish is very rich in healthy fat; that’s to say, in omega-3. Omega-3 is recommended to avoid the risk of heart attacks and hypertension, as well as being very beneficial for the prevention of arthritis and circulatory problems. Salmon and mackerel stand out as the most omega-3 acid rich fish.

Oily fish can help lower cholesterol. It’s also great at thinning the blood and full of fat-soluble vitamins (D, E, and A).

Oily fish is a great source of vitamins and minerals, which is what makes it a “superfood”.

DID YOU KNOW...

  • Oily fish are also known as blue fish, as their skin is generally blue, a result of the need to accumulate fat in their body due to their activity and the long-distance migrations they carry out. Like, for example, mackerel, swordfish, Bonito del Norte tuna and sardines.
  • Peak oily fish season is spring–summer, when sardines and Bonito del Norte tuna are the protagonists. This is alongside almadraba tuna, caught in a traditional way by tuna fishers between the almadrabas of Barbate, Conil, Zahara and Tarifa.
  • Salmon is both the most-consumed oily fish as well as the most beneficial, thanks to its high Omega-3 and Vitamin B12 content.
  • Oily fish, including sardines, are normally caught with seine fishing practices,
  • and the Danish seine used is unique with its arrow-shaped tail.

Oily fish are in season all year round.

You can eat them at any time of the year: in summer, you have sardines and Bonito del Norte tuna, and in winter, you’ll find salmon, originating from one of the main salmon farms in Norway. It’s of such good quality that you won’t feel like you’re missing out on wild varieties, which can be very difficult to find in today’s market.

Types of oily fish

There are a number of different types of oily fish.

How to identify oily fish

Let’s look at how to distinguish oily fish from white fish:

Oily fish tend to have an arrow-shaped caudal fin to optimise their movement and energy. White fish, however, usually have a round or straight caudal fin.
