This bivalve mollusc lives in deep waters with sandy bottoms, close to the coast. Specifically, these scallops come from UK waters, and are different from the Galician scallops in the shape of their shells. They have a diameter of about 12-14cm. and have been gutted, vacuum-packed and frozen at source, so once thawed they cannot be refrozen.

In the Galician scallop, the upper shell is completely flat, and its wavy edges do not fit perfectly with the edges of the lower shell, but rather enter a little inside the shell, with the others protruding a little. This is not the case with the foreign scallop, in which the upper shell is usually slightly oval and fits perfectly with the lower shell.
